TEBA Praises PUCT’s High-Voltage Transmission Decision

Austin, Texas (April 24, 2025) — The Texas Energy Business Alliance (TEBA) praised today’s landmark decision by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) to build extra high-voltage (also known as 765-kilovolt) transmission lines to serve the Permian Basin’s rapidly growing electricity needs.

“This decision accelerates the state’s job growth, economic investments, and energy infrastructure,” said Bryn Baker, TEBA’s senior director of market and policy innovation. “TEBA members’ power needs are growing in West Texas and across the state. This PUCT decision marks the first step in building out a transmission backbone that can supply reliable, low-cost power to fuel a new generation of economic growth in Texas.”

TEBA applauds the leadership of PUCT Chairman Gleeson, the Commission, and its staff for this precedent-setting decision to invest in the first extra high-voltage, high-capacity lines in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid. This enables long-term economic growth through more cost-efficient transmission buildout.

TEBA members also strongly agree with the PUCT’s statement explaining the decision: “Higher voltage lines can carry more power and meet higher levels of demand as the state continues to grow, reduce expensive congestion on existing transmission lines, and could save money in the long-term by avoiding the need to build new transmission lines to catch up to future demand.”
