Advancing reliable, affordable clean energy for Texas

The Texas Energy Buyers Alliance (TEBA) is working with small and large employers across Texas to reduce energy costs, protect the state’s competitive energy market, and ensure our power infrastructure meets the state’s future needs.

TEBA includes more than 260 small and large employers across Texas. Our members employ hundreds of thousands of employees in thousands of facilities here — we’re committed to strengthening the ERCOT grid, lowering power bills for all customers, propelling Texas’ economy, creating jobs, spurring innovation, and extending Texas’
clean energy leadership.

TEBA members have prospered in Texas and driven the state’s economy, thanks in part to its dependable, business-friendly energy market. We count on the reliable, low-cost electricity that the state produces through our abundant energy deposits, traditional generation sources, and nation-leading renewable energy industries.

Texas’ thirst for electricity is growing quickly, due things like population growth, oil and gas industry advancements, and new industries such as advanced manufacturing, hydrogen production and data centers. Peak use on the ERCOT grid grew more between 2021 to 2023 than it did from 2006 to 2021.

Without more energy from diversified sources — including renewables — skyrocketing energy needs could lead to unaffordable electric prices and interruptions in service for
employers, families and communities. TEBA and its member companies are working to increase all forms of electric generation, ensuring Texas has a reliable grid that keeps prices low and meets future needs.

Renewable energy is helping Texas meet record electricity demand and improve reliability — especially on hot summer afternoons. It’s also reducing energy prices — saving Texans billions of dollars. By doubling down on the state’s energy leadership, Texans will see lower bills and increased reliability.

Let's increase reliability and lower bills for employers and families.

Output

  • Renewables provide about a third of all energy consumed in ERCOT— and provide even more power (about 36%) during peak demand hours.
  • On June 18, 2024, renewables provided almost 50% of the grid’s on-peak electricity because solar output correlates well with much of the system peak.

Reliability

  • For the first half of 2024, coal and natural gas generators made up almost two-thirds of all forced or unplanned outages — renewables help offset those outages.
  • Fossil-based resources were the cause of most of the power failure during Winter Storm Uri, so more renewables — especially wind power and battery storage fueled by solar power — would have reduced the catastrophic effect of 2021’s state-wide winter storm.

Savings & Benefits

  • Texas’ nation-leading renewable resources reduced wholesale electricity costs by about $21.6 billion between 2010 and 2022 — and by about $11 billion in the last two years alone.
  • From June to September 2023 — just 4 months — renewables reduced wholesale electricity costs by about $900 million.
  • More than two-thirds of Texas counties either currently host or are expected to soon host at least one of Texas’ more than 1,000 renewable energy and/or energy storage projects. Over their lifetimes, clean energy projects are expected to yield between $12.5 and $15.9 billion in local taxes — without increasing costs on local communities — and $11.8 and $21.7 billion in landowner lease payments.

Renewables Provide Important Resource Diversity, Reduce Costs, and Contribute to Reliability

Our Key Objectives

Without renewables, skyrocketing energy prices could have cut deeply into companies’ bottom lines — and, during energy emergencies, threatened to put them out of business.

Texas employers need the reliable, affordable power that renewables provide. TEBA and its members are advancing pro-growth energy policies that increase reliability, reduce costs, meet future demand, and catalyze Texas’ clean energy leadership.

TEBA Affiliates are Texas companies that care about reliable, low-cost, clean power. As an Affiliate, you will get updates about TEBA policy initiatives, legislation, and potential regulations that could affect your energy costs. We also will add your name to the growing list of businesses that are joining together to support reliable, affordable clean energy for Texas employers.
